Biography
Manuel Olías Álvarez is Full Professor of Hydrology at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Huelva (SW Spain). He obtained a Degree (1987) in Geology and PhD (1995) in Hydrogeology at the University of Granada. He made predoctoral stays in the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, University of Lisbon and Free University of Berlin. Between 1993 and 2001 he was working for a company (Agbar Group) as chief of water supply services for several andalusian cities. In 2001 he joined the University of Huelva where he has held several positions. Between 2004 and 2010 he was Vice-Dean of Geology of the Faculty of Experimental Sciences. Since his incorporation at the Huelva University he has been working on the contamination of water resources by mining activities in the Iberian Pyrite Belt. He has participated in 12 national Projects and 5 European Projects (5th Framework, POCTEP and LIFE+ programmes). He has won several Research Contracts, including one with the Andalusian Water Agency for advice on the development on the Hydrological Plan of the Tinto and Odiel Rivers. He has supervised 4 Thesis Doctorals related with the water contamination by acid mine drainage and have directed others 19 Master Theses. During 15 years as Professor at the University he has published numerous articles in SCI journals (e.g. Journal of Hydrology, Science of the Total Environment, Water Research, Environmental International and Environmental Pollution), national magazines, books chapters and proceedings, etc. During the scholar years 2011/12 and 2012/13 he was Professor of Soil and Water Resources Management at the Department of Physic, Chemical and Natural Systems of the University Pablo de Olavide. He also have participated as professor in 7 Masters from the Universities of Huelva, International de Andalucía, Cádiz, Granada and Málaga in courses related with hydrology and water contamination. He has belonged to the Management Boards of the Geologist Official Association of Andalusia between 2006 and 2013 and the Geological Society of Spain between 2012 to 2016. Since 2018 is the director of the 'Aguas de Huelva' Chair.
