Embedded interrogatives and coordination in French

Abstract

The aim of this paper is threefold: it is an attempt to collect highly dispersed comments on coordination of and in embedded interrogatives and to confront them with corpus material; it is an attempt to provide a more accurate analysis of elements introducing embedded interrogatives through structures in which they appear coordinated; it is an attempt to interpret the syntactic phenomena in terms of semantic properties. The paper concentrates on three particular types of coordination: the coordination of clauses introduced by interrogative elements and the conjunction que. the coordination of functionally different interrogative elements and the coordination of clauses with an opposite truth value.El objetivo de este artículo se divide en tres aspectos. Primero, es un intento de recopilar comentarios muy dispersos sobre la coordinación y los interrogativos indirectos para confrontarlos con material del corpus. Segundo, procura proporcionar un análisis más certero de los elementos presentando las interrogativas indirectas mediante estructuras en las que aparezcan coordinadas. Por último, intenta interpretar el fenómeno sintáctico en lo que se refiere a las características semánticas. Este artículo se centra en tres tipos de coordinación en particular: la coordinación de frases que comienzan con elementos interrogativos y la conjunción “que”, la coordinación de elementos interrogativos con diferentes funciones, y la coordinación de oraciones con un valor semántico opuesto.
