Abstract
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) constitute at present basic tools to manage spatial data. In geology teaching, GIS offer very interesting educational resources. However, the use of GIS in this field is limited, since it demands deep knowledge of specific software and the acquisition of licenses usually very expensive for the students. The new technologies of GIS web servers solve these limitations, providing web access to GIS resources without specific software. In this work we have developed a GIS server with an educational purpose. The server hosts an application to do virtual geologic field trips in the vicinity of the Granada city. The application allows the users to manage and query different data layers as geologic maps, digital elevation models, topographic maps, aerial photography, as well as access to the geological field trips routes, recommended stops and geological explanations
