Abstract
Taking the main assumptions of the Realist school of thought and the theory of the democratic peace as its starting point, this paper attempts to provide the reader with a better understanding of the rationale behind the “American foreign democratic paradigm”. In trying to discern sophism from reality in this respect, the author retraces the evolution of “neo-wilsonianism” from the “Reagan doctrine” to the present“Bush doctrine”. As a result of this inquiry, the myth of the American exceptionalism sees itself confronted with the cold realities of the balance of power, the war against terrorism and several other economic and political shaping forces. Idealism aside, the pragmatic rationale behind the American democracy promotion strategy will eventually lead us to conclude that this bi-partisan trend will persist in the years to come.
