El impacto de la exclusión social sobre el crecimiento económico en la Unión Europea

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo es verificar que la presencia de pobreza y exclusión social en la Unión Europea supone una limitación que afecta a los niveles de crecimiento económico, impidiendo alcanzar, no ya el ansiado “crecimiento económico integrador” perseguido por las instituciones eurocomunitarias; sino el crecimiento económico en sí, planteado en términos convencionales. Para ello, tras la fundamentación teórica basada en las ideas de grandes economistas como Keynes o Myrdal, se analizarán diversos contrastes empíricos realizados, usándose distintos indicadores y en momentos diferentes, verificándose dicha relación. Con unos niveles de pobreza y exclusión social que han crecido en la UE durante la difícil etapa que estamos atravesando, los resultados de esta investigación pueden resultar de gran interés también para el ámbito de la recomendación de políticas públicas.

The aim of this paper is to verify that the presence of poverty and social exclusion at the European Union involves a limitation into the levels of economic growth, not only hampering to achieve the desired “inclusive economic growth” pursued by EU institutions, but also conventional economic growth itself. Thus, after theoretical grounds based on the ideas of great economists such as Keynes and Myrdal, it will be analyzed various empirical tests, different indicators being used and at different times, verifying that relationship. With poverty and social exclusion figures increasing at the EU during the difficult times we are going through, the results of this research may also be of great interest to the field of public policy recommendation.
