Residents' tourism support behaviour : the role of sustainable tourism attitude

Abstract

Sustainability is necessary and a good alternative way to minimize tourism’s negative impacts and its long-term success. Residents have an important role for sustainable development in a touristic destination. The purpose of this paper is to examine the structural relationship between residents’ sustainable tourism attitude and their support behaviour. Although there has been much research to examine residents’ opinions towards tourism impacts, studies about their sustainable tourism have not been profoundly explored in current literature. A total of 403 valid questionnaires were collected to empirically test the measurement and structural model using a structural equation modelling approach. The study sample consists of residents who live in Didim, Turkey. According to the results, four of seven dimensions of sustainable tourism attitude relate to residents’ support for sustainable tourism. The results imply that perceived social costs are the most effective dimension affecting support, whereas maximizing community participation has the lowest impact. Theoretical and managerial contributions are discussed.La sostenibilidad es una buena y necesaria alternativa para minimizar el impacto negativo del turismo y su éxito a largo plazo. Los residentes tienen un papel importante para el desarrollo sostenible de un destino turístico. El propósito de este documento es examinar la relación estructural entre la actitud y el comportamiento de apoyo de los residentes a el turismo sostenible. A pesar de que ha habido muchos estudios que examinan la opinión de los residentes sobre impacto del turismo, los estudios sobre el turismo sostenible no han sido explorados en profundidad en los estudios actuales. Un total de 403 cuestionarios válidos fueron recopilados para probar empíricamente la medición y estructuración del modelo usando un modelo de enfoque de ecuación estructurales. La muestra de estudio consiste en residentes de Didim, Turquía. De acuerdo a los resultados, cuatro de las siete dimensiones de la actitud sobre el turismo sostenible se relacionan apoyo de los residentes al turismo sostenible. Los resultados implican que los costos sociales percibidos son la dimensión más efectiva que afecta al apoyo, mientras que maximizar la participación de la comunidad tiene el menor impacto. Contribuciones teóricas y de gestión son discutidas.
