Abstract
The interpretation of the ESCI-Béticas deep seismic reflection profiles allows to define the type of deformation in the suture zone of the Iberian-Alborân crustal domains in the central Betics. This suture zone corresponds to a crustal thrust that accommodated shortening in its footwall block along the cover (Subbetics)-basement (Hercynian crust) detachment. This fact and the absence of a true continental hypercollision, lead to discard the existence of a mid-crustal detachment whose emersion caused the formation of the Spanish Central System
