Abstract
Increasing strenght on natural resources and climate change perspectives are raising aware States and citizens on the need to protect this legacy. Conversely, these natural resources can be taken as objectives in contexts of conflict, since their access and control could be a source of struggle between States. Protection of Biodiversity and ecosystem services provided by the environment and its consideration as strategic goods to protect should be taken into account in geopolitical analysis. International security actions should combine preventive efforts related to possible actions affecting the environment (bio or agroterrorism, trade in endangered species, intentional introduction of exotics organism, etc.) with educational measures for the conservation of nature. Collaboration between rich and poor countries has to ensure the development of the second without compromising its natural legacy, in some cases their main source of income
