Consideraciones historiográficas sobre el papel de la costa onubense en la carrera de Indias. Paralelismos entre dos élites navales próximas a los duques de Medina Sidonia: Los Chaves Galindo en Sevilla y los Garrocho en Huelva

Abstract

Tras repasar la historiografía más relevante sobre la Carrera de Indias, el trabajo se centra en tres aspectos: por una parte, las nuevas aportaciones que estudian los fenómenos referentes a la venalidad, el fraude y la corrupción, generados por la propia dinámica de la Carrera; por otra, la cuestión del ascenso económico y social de ciertas élites navales y la red de infuencias que lo hacían posible en ese contexto; por último, el repaso a trabajos recientes sobre la relación de Huelva con la Carrera de Indias. A partir de alguno de estos trabajos, y la documentación manejada, apuntamos ciertos paralelismos en la evolución militar y socio-económica durante buena parte de los siglos XVI-XVII de dos importantes clanes familiares –élites navales locales- surgidos en el infuyente entorno de los duques de Medina Sidonia y su relación con la Carrera de Indias, la Casa de Contratación y la Capitanía General de la Mar Océano y Costas de Andalucía: el clan sevillano de los Chaves Galindo Abreu y el de los Garrocho, los conocidos “cazadores de piratas” de Huelv

After reviewing the most relevant historiographical issues on the Carrera de Indias, the work focuses on three particular aspects: on the one hand, the new contributions that deal with the phenomena of venality, fraud and corruption generated by the dynamics of the “Carrera” itself; secondly, the issue of the economic and social rise of certain naval elites and the network of infuences that made it possible and that were generated in that context; fnally, we review some of the recent studies that have raised various questions about Huelva’s relationship with the “Carrera de Indias”. Based on some of these studies, and the appropriate documentary references, we point out certain evident parallels in the military and socio-economic evolution (throughout a good part of the 16th and 17th centuries), of two important family clans –local naval elites– arisen in the infuential environment of the dukes of Medina Sidonia and their relationship with the “Carrera de Indias”, the “Casa de Contratación” and the General Captaincy of the Ocean Sea and Coasts of Andalucía: the sevillian clan of the Chaves Galindo Abreu and the Garrocho, the famous “pirate hunters of Huelva”
