Las viudas ante la muerte en tierras onubenses (1530-1675): la herencia y la preparación para el más allá

Abstract

El estudio se centra en el papel de las viudas en dos ámbitos complementarios: la gestión de la herencia y la preparación espiritual para la muerte. A las viudas, al ser a menudo el miembro supérstite del matrimonio, les cabía la responsabilidad de organizar una herencia equitativa y coherente. Las mejoras de tercio y quinto servían para premiar a los hijos cuidadores, a los más pequeños o a las hijas solteras, corrigiendo desequilibrios propios de una sociedad patriarcal, mientras que la transmisión de vestimenta, ajuar y enseres domésticos entre madres, hijas, nietas o vecinas servía para beneficiar al entorno, familiar y extra familiar, y para configurar vínculos simbólicos de afecto, memoria y solidaridad femenina. Pero, junto a la dimensión patrimonial, la redacción del testamento se entendía como un acto espiritual y moral ligado al ideal del bien morir. Las viudas acomodadas destinaban una parte importante del quinto disponible o de sus bienes libres a mandas piadosas, misas, capellanías, memorias perpetuas, ayudas a pobres, viudas o conventos, integrando con ello la salvación espiritual y la afirmación del estatus social. Para las viudas de los estratos más humildes, el ideal del bien morir se limitaba a garantizar una sepultura decorosa y a obtener una intercesión espiritual básica, frecuentemente condicionada al auxilio de redes comunitarias, la caridad vecinal o el amparo de cofradías religiosas. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The study focuses on the role of widows in two complementary areas: inheritance management and spiritual preparation for death. Widows, often the surviving members of a marriage, were responsible for organizing a fair and coherent inheritance. Improvements in thirds and fifths served to reward caring sons, younger sons, or unmarried daughters, correcting imbalances inherent in a patriarchal society. The transmission of clothing, trousseau, and household goods between mothers, daughters, granddaughters, or neighbors served to benefit the family and non-family environment and to establish symbolic bonds of affection, memory, and female solidarity. However, along with the patrimonial dimension, writing a will was understood as a spiritual and moral act linked to the ideal of a good death. Wealthy widows allocated a significant portion of their available fifth or their free property to pious offerings, masses, chaplaincies, perpetual memorials, aid to the poor, widows, or convents, thereby integrating spiritual salvation and affirmation of social status. For widows from the humblest strata, the ideal of a good death was limited to ensuring a decent burial and obtaining basic spiritual intercession, often conditional on the assistance of community networks, neighborhood charity, or the protection of religious brotherhoods.
