Abstract
This article explains the influence that nineteenth-century ethnographic theoretical approaches have exerted on prehistoric archaeology until well into the 20th century. It also explains how that fact has provided a biased heuristic and hermeneutics with regards to the study and understanding of coastal gatherers and hunting communities. Likewise, there is a recognizable importance of the revisionist tendencies appearing after 1980 which initiated a process of theoretical deconstruction. This process has made possible a more accurate frame of interpretation of such communities
