Abstract
The Mecina Fault is a low-angle normal fault that superpose the Alpujarride over the NevadoFllabride and was active throughout Its whole extension before the Upper Miocene. From the Upper Miocene, high-angle normal faults develop in western Sierra Nevada, with km length slips and associated asymmetric basins. However, these faults joint to the Mecina Fault, that is not sealed by the Neogene sedimentary basins in western Sierra Nevada. All these data suggest that the Mecina Fault has been reactivated in western Sierra Nevada from Upper Miocene times and that constitutes the basal detachment of the fault system in this region.
