Abstract
Building on Marx’s analysis of the contradictions of capitalism, this article defends the structural nature of the causes that explain the current hegemony of the neoliberal governmentality model. Having argued this position, we look at some of the central dimensions Ernesto Laclau links to populist reason to see whether this could be a political option capable of displacing the neoliberal hegemony. In light of the conclusions drawn, we lastly examine the subjectivity forged by neoliberal governmentality in order to determine which ideological orientation of populist movements would be most likely to succeed politically
