Abstract

Jose Royo Gómez (1895-1961), member of School of Geology of Madrid, was the author of Important contributions to the topic of litostratigraphy of Continental Tertiary basins of Spain, mainly Duero and Tajo Basins, in the years before the Spanish Civil War. His essential contributions about this topic are: a) The presence of at least two cycles with lacustrine - paludinal limestones (Páramo limestones) in the upper part of Continental Neogenous record of the Duero basin; b) An approach to a most correct correlation and discrimination within evaporite (gypsiferous in the outcrops) continental tertiary deposits ; c) A biostratigraphic dating of many marginal and even central terrigenous deposits of Duero and Tajo basins that had been previously referred to Quaternary or Late Pliocene. These contributions are analysed from the point of view o f the present state of the art
