Abstract
The mines of Sierra Morena were subjected to intensive and systematic exploitation during the Roman period, in a way never before witnessed, allowing total production to be second only to the industrial period. Bearing witness to this volume, the numerous archaeo-mining and archaeo-metallurgical remains (rafas, galleries, pits, escombreras, slag heaps....) fossilized into the landscape which have been documented during fieldwork in recent years. A composite view of the archaeological, epigraphic and documentary evidence available allow us to analyze the mining aspects --exploitation techniques--, as well as metallurgy, and the administration and spatial organization of the Linares-La Carolina district in the Roman period.
