El doble papel de Hércules como libertador e invasor en la historiografía hispánica: De Alfonso X a Juan de Mariana

Abstract

El personaje de Hércules es objeto, en las obras historiográficas hispánicas, de una doble consideración como invasor y libertador. Tal disyuntiva, originada tras la apropiación del mito del héroe tebano por la historiografía peninsular, está presente en la Edad Media y culmina en el Renacimiento con, por un lado, la antipatía hacia el personaje en el siglo XV y, por otro, el olvido de esa animadversión desde la crónica viterbiense. A partir de ello, este artículo pretende dilucidar que el consiguiente retorno a la visión positiva del héroe en obras renacentistas posteriores, como la de Juan de Mariana, se relacionaría con un enfoque y objetivos historiográficos compartidos con las crónicas alfonsíes, a pesar de las diferencias entre ambos autores.

The character of Hercules is the target, in Spanish historiographic works, of a double consideration as an invader and as a liberator. This dilemma, originated after the appropriation of the myth of the Theban hero by Spanish historiography, is present in the Middle Ages and is apparently culminated in the Renaissance with, on the one hand, the antipathy towards the character during the XVth century and, on the other, the fall into oblivion of that hostility from Viterbo’s chronicle onwards. Taking that as a basis, this article aims to elucidate that the ensuing return to a positive vision of the hero in later Renaissance works, such as Juan de Mariana’s, would be related to a historiographic perspective and objectives which are shared with Alphonsus the Wise’s chronicles, despite the differences between the two authors.
