Arquitectura tipográfica del libro en el Siglo de Oro

Abstract

A partir del conocido símil entre impresión y arquitectura, este artículo analiza la estructura del libro antiguo desde el punto de vista de su fabricación material. Se estudian, sucesivamente, la compaginación, la letrería y la composición. Como ejemplo de los usos tipográficos en nuestro Siglo de Oro, se ofrece el análisis parcial de dos libros impresos en casa de Juan de la Cuesta en 1604: Arauco domado (del que se estudian los comienzos de cantos) y el Quijote (del que se estudia la portada). Como conclusión, se señala la necesidad de aclarar los criterios que se siguieron para la fabricación de los libros, si queremos entender lo que significan las diferentes presentaciones tipográficas. Se trata, en suma, de recobrar la competencia tipográfica de aquellos operarios que fabricaron los libros que atesoran nuestras bibliotecas.

Drawing on the renowned analogy between printing and architecture, this article analyzes the structure of old books from the point of view of their manufacturing, and thus examines layout, movable types and typesetting. It offers a partial analysis of two books printed by the house of Juan de la Cuesta in 1604, as examples of typographical work in the Spanish Golden Age: Arauco domado (the opening cantos) and the first edition of Don Quixote (the title page). The article shows that to understand the variety of typographical presentations we must clarify the criteria that book manufacturers followed. This paper thus revives the study of the typographical skills of the artisans who produced the books we treasure in our libraries.
