Das margens à criminalidade: As mulheres e o crime no norte do Portugal de oitocentos

Abstract

Neste trabalho, procuramos analisar a relação da mulher com a criminalidade, tendo como base dois delitos que, no século xix e ainda nas primeiras décadas do século xx, eram considerados tipicamente femininos: o aborto e o infanticídio. Trata-se de dois crimes cujo estudo é dificultado pelo secretismo que, geralmente, os envolvia e pelo estigma que recaía sobre os implicados no seu cometimento A nossa investigação incide sobre este tipo de delitos, praticados no distrito de Viana do Castelo, situado no norte de Portugal. Para o efeito, recorremos a fontes judiciais, a estatísticas criminais organizadas pelas autoridades administrativas, bem como a trabalhos médicos, nos quais se procurava explicar a ocorrência destes delitos e a sua associação ao género feminino.

In this work, we seek to analyze the relationship between women and crime, based on two crimes that, in the 19th century and even in the first decades of the 20th century, were considered typically female: abortion and infanticide. These are two crimes whose study is made difficult by the secrecy that generally involved them and the stigma that fell on those involved in their commission. from Portugal. For this purpose, we used judicial sources, criminal statistics organized by the administrative authorities, as well as medical studies, in which we tried to explain the occurrence of these crimes and their association with the female gender.
