Understanding the Intention to Adopt Cloud-based Accounting Information System in Jordanian SMEs

Abstract

The Information Technology (IT) revolution that led to the development of cloud computing services and systems has brought numerous benefits to end users handling business through the Internet, particularly in the field of accounting information systems (AIS). Cloud-based accounting information systems (CB-AIS) enable firms to substantially reduce their investment in IT and have flexible access to an enormous group of current and scalable resources. CB-AIS enables small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to undertake basic bookkeeping responsibilities themselves instead of paying external auditors for the same services. In Jordan, however, current businesses are still in the infancy stage when it comes to CB-AIS adoption. Therefore, this study applied the Technology, Organization, and Environment model to examine CB-AIS adoption among SMEs in Jordan. Data collection was achieved using a structured survey questionnaire collected from 156 owners/managers of SMEs in Jordan through online means. The proposed research framework comprises six factors that influence intention to adopt CB-AIS (IACB-AIS). Based on the findings, the proposed hypotheses were supported in that the factors positively and significantly affect the IACB-AIS of SMEs in Jordan. Through examining an actual IACB-AIS case and highlighting the importance of its application, the study and its findings are expected to contribute to decision-makers and practitioners in the IT field

La revolución de la Tecnología de la Información (TI) que dio lugar al desarrollo de los servicios y sistemas de computación en la nube ha supuesto numerosos beneficios para los usuarios que gestionan sus negocios en Internet, particularmente en el ámbito de los sistemas de información contable (accounting information systems, AIS). Los sistemas de información contable en la nube (CB-AIS) permiten a las empresas reducir considerablemente la inversión en TI y tener acceso flexible a una amplia gama de recursos actuales y expansibles. Los CB-AIS permiten a las pymes realizar tareas básicas de contabilidad por su cuenta, en lugar de pagar a auditores externos por esos mismos servicios. En Jordania, no obstante, las empresas siguen en una etapa de infancia en lo relativo a la adopción de CB-AIS. Por lo tanto, este estudio aplica el modelo de Tecnología, Organización y Entorno para examinar la adopción de CB-AIS por parte de las pymes en Jordania. La recolección de datos se ha llevado a cabo mediante un cuestionario estructurado realizado a 156 dueños/directores de pymes de forma online. El marco de investigación propuesto comprende seis factores que influyen en la intención de adoptar CB-AIS (IACB-AIS). Según los resultados, las hipótesis propuestas son correctas en tanto que los factores afectan de manera positiva y significativa la IACB-AIS por parte de las pymes en Jordania. Mediante el examen de un caso real de IACB-AIS y subrayando la importancia de su aplicación, el estudio y sus resultados pueden ser de ayuda para los encargados de tomar decisiones y los profesionales del ámbito de las TI.
