Abstract
The Montsant conglomerates accumulated in an alluvial fan system prograding towards the N and NW during the Oligocene. They were generated as a sedimentary response to the erosion of the highs devoloped after the activity of the La Llaberia faults and some laterally related overthrust placements. The clastic materials were usually carried by hydraulic flows that were modified during sedimentary accumulation processes. One of the main conglomeratic levels shows a very unusual basal surface. It displays a marked discontinuity at the centre and disappears laterally. This suggests that the turbulent flow was confined in the central part of the course and that the confinement did not exist laterally when the flow was of high-density and laminar behaviour. Thus, a high-density and massive flow was confined in some former fluvial-like course and underwent significant dynamic transformations during its intermittent progradation episodes
