Abstract
“Contromura interne”, databile all’ultimo quarto del
V secolo.
This paper presents an analytical study of the so-called Porta or Arch of Santa Maria, one of the ancient entrances to the Port of Rome. The construction of the Porta coincides with the building of the section of the city walls known as the “Inner Counter-walls,” dating back to the last quarter of the 5th century. In addition to being the only monumental entrance still preserved along the city wall circuit, it is likely that the Porta of Santa Maria was one of the main access points to the city, allowing entry to those arriving from Rome via the Via Portuense. The structure offers an extraordinary testimony to the continuity of life within this sector of the city of Porto, as evidenced, for example, by the recording of a series of restorations carried out over different periods, covering a time span that extends from its construction in the 5th century AD to interventions in the 15th century AD.
