Abstract

The analysis of a strike-s/ip fault population measured in Lower Miocene limestones near Tudela (Navarra, Spain) results in a deviatoric stress tensor characterized by oriented 028, 79 S, 120, 05 W and The absolute values of effective stresses have been calculated approximately in this way: (7) plotting the fault planes on a Mohr diagram for each R values; (2) defining the Mohr envelope of the Tudela limestones from laboratory testing; (3) estimating the lithostatic vertical palaeostress, equivalent to 02', (4) fitting the former elements into a Œ-T diagram where both stress scale and coordinate origin are defined and the absolute stresses can be read The calculated values are: (77=470 kg./cm.2, (72=50 kg./cm.2, 03=55 kg./cm.2 Fitting was only possible for R=0.2; so this type of analysis also allows a critical revision of the deviatoric stress resutls inferred from fault analysis
