Abstract
Punta Umbría es un municipio costero de la provincia de Huelva que representa un destino turístico relevante durante el siglo XX. A lo largo de la historia ha estado vinculado a la industria pesquera y a la vigilancia de la costa frente a amenazas de piratas berberiscos y de control del contrabando. La prensa histórica nos abre una ventana de gran valor para adentrarnos en noticias sobre diferentes ámbitos, lo que ha permitido realizar este estudio centrado en el siglo XIX. La información obtenida de la Biblioteca Virtual de Prensa Histórica de España, de la Hemeroteca Histórica del Ayuntamiento de Huelva, de la Hemeroteca Digital de la Biblioteca Nacional de España y del The British Newspaper Archive, se aporta en diferentes apartados relativos a su denominación, descripción, al primer viaje de Cristóbal Colón, la Batalla de La Albuera, la actividad pesquera o los baños de mar, entre otros epígrafes. Punta Umbría denota presencia en la prensa histórica del siglo XIX gracias a su situación estratégica y a la majestuosidad de sus playas, lo que propicia que tenga un lugar relevante en la historia, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional.

Punta Umbría is a coastal town in the province of Huelva that represented a significant tourist destination during the 20th century. Throughout history, it has been linked to the fishing industry and coastal surveillance against threats from Barbary pirates and smuggling. The historical newspapers provide a valuable window into news from different areas, allowing us to conduct this study, focusing on the 19th century. The information obtained from the Virtual Library of Historical Newspaper of Spain, Historical Newspaper Library of the Huelva City Council, Digital Newspaper Library of the National Library of Spain, and The British Newspaper Archive is provided in different sections relating to its name, description, Christopher Columbus's first voyage, the Battle of La Albuera, fishing activity, sea bathing, among other topics. Punta Umbría was featured in the historical newspapers of the 19thcentury thanks to its strategic location and the majesty of its beaches, which gave it a prominent place in history, both nationally and internationally.
