Abstract

La llegada de un rinoceronte indiano en Lisboa en 1515 tuvo una inmediata repercusión en toda Europa, como testimonia el poemillo de Giovanni Giacomo Penni publicado en Roma el 13 de julio del mismo año. Pero el texto de Penni revela también la actitud típica de los humanistas del principio del siglo XVI de interpretar lo desconocido con lo conocido y de reinterpretar el mundo y sus maravillos animales a la luz de una cultura preexistente no siempre asentada en la realidad factual._________________________________ The arrival of an Indian rhino in Lisbon in 1515 had an immediate effect all over the Europe, as it attests the little text by Giovanni Giacomo Penni published in Rome on July 1515. But the Penni’s text also reveals the typical vocation of the humanists, in the beginning of XVI century, to understand the unknown with the well-known and to read the world and its wonder animals to the light of a preexisting culture not necessarily seated in the factual reality.
