Abstract

The conglomerates of the Montsant Fm outcropping along the western margin of Catalan Coastal Ranges (CCC). We studied several conglomeratic bodies that have not yet been described in detail. The main aim of the present work is to elucidate the genesis and depositional significance of these rock bodies, that usually are displayed as stratiform-like outcrops. It could have been generated because of the accumulation of many clasts carried by high-density depositional flows in the context of episodic progradation of several alluvial fans along the Oligocene. Between the gravel-rich courses that carry huge amounts of rounded clasts due to hydraulic discharges have small depressions where the mass flows deposits could accumulate. The mixture of well-rounded clasts with other with subangular morphologies evidence that these last materials are from initial deposits cannibalized. The geometrical disposition of studied conglomeratic levels displays a progressive unconformity arrangement.
