Tourism research in Spain : the state of the art

Abstract

This paper analyses the evolution that Tourism Research has undergone in Spain in the last few years as well as its present situation, on the basis of four different variables: (i) the PhD dissertations carried out in the last ten years; (ii) the papers published in any ISI source during the last five years; (iii) the scientific journals on Tourism edited in Spain; (iv) and finally, the active research groups, centres and networks concerned with Tourism that exist in the country at the moment. In general terms, it will be shown that, despite becoming more and more multidisciplinary and a subject mater of interest for a larger number of higher education institutions, the research carried out on Tourism in Spain seems to be still restricted to very few fields of knowledge, universities and regions.

Este trabajo analiza la evolución que la Investigación turística ha experimentado en España en los últimos años, así como su presente situación, en base a cuatro diferentes variables. (i) las tesis doctorales llevadas a cabo en los últimos años 10 años, (ii) los artículos publicados en cualquier fuente ISI durante los últimos 5 años, (iii) las revistas científicas sobre turismo editadas en España, (iv) y finalmente los grupos de investigación activos, centros y redes relacionadas con el turismo que existen en el país en este momento. A grandes rasgos, se mostrará que a pesar de ser cada vez más multidisciplinario y un tema de interés para un gran número de instituciones de educación superior, la investigación realizada sobre el turismo en España está restringida a tan solo algunos campos de conocimiento, universidades y regiones.
