“Tirano, traidor, asesino”: El republicanismo de John Milton y la justificación del Regicidio

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo es ofrecer un intento de entender la Historia intelectual, especialmente la justificación del regicidio de John Milton, en términos de creencias “fundantes”. Las creencias “fundantes” son un conjunto de creencias básicas que deben ser consideradas a la hora de interpretar las razones y los fines que un texto político particular pretende alcanzar. Como resultado de ello, se enfatizan dos problemas principales en la aproximación de Quentin Skinner a la historia intelectual. Uno de ellos es el rechazo de los motivos y las razones, el otro el limitado margen concedido a la noción de convención en tanto que concepto clave para revelar el significado del texto.

The aim of this paper is to offer a tentative attempt to understand Intellectual History, particularly John Milton´s justification of Regecide, in terms of grounding beliefs. Grounding beliefs are the set of basic beliefs which should be taken into account in order to understand the reasons and ends to which a particular political text is meant to aim. As a result of that, two major obstacles in Quentin Skinner’s approach to Intellectual History are emphasized. One is the rejection of motives and reasons, and the other the limited extent of the notion of convention, as the key concept to unfold the meaning of the text.
