Abstract
We can basically describe directed energy weapons as those capable of transmitting energy to a precise target without using a shell. Such weapons can be categorized according to the kind of transmitted energy, finding those the use electromagnetic waves, atomic and subatomic particles. To this day, most efforts are aimed to develop high energy lasers and high power microwaves. If the first ones amassed initial failures and their development is currently focused on sel-protection against low intensity attacks, both kinds present enough progress to regard their operational use. US preeminence coud be expected, given the huge investment, research and evelopment requirements in this sort of weapons. However, reality is more complex and the course of directed energy weapons has been a long journey of changing priorities, failed projects and technological innovations that opened new possibilities
