Abstract

La Mancha Occidental (also called Hydrogeological Unit 04.04) is located in the castilian submesete and has a surface of 5.500 km2.The Tablas de Daimiel and Ojos del Guadiana wetlands were placed in the SW border of this aquifer. Under undisturbed conditions these wetlands were the main discharge zone of the aquifer. The average annual discharge was about 700 - 130 million cubic meters. The intensive groundwater extraction for agricultures purposes during the last two decades has induced an inversion of the groundwater flow and the degradation of the wetlands. In this article are described the detailed geological characteristics of the zone that play an relevant role in the hydrological functioning of the wedands
