Abstract
The geological cartography carried out in an area near Ayamonte (Huelva) allows us to analyze the most significant geological features of a structural high in the eastern end of the Algarve basin. The stratigraphic record of a transgression during the Upper Triassic, associated with a “rifting” event linked to the beginning of the opening of the Atlantic Ocean, is described. The geometric style of the systems of normal faults simultaneous with the igneous activity of the Triassic and the posterior deformations is also shown. The reactivation of the fault zones during the Pliocene-Quaternary and the exhumation of the Mesozoic paleo-cover is proposed in relation to the recent tectonics, linked to the evolution of the Guadalquivir basin
