Abstract
Serpentinites are rocks which in the ornamental rocks industry have traditionally been included in the group of marbles, without systematic studies of them. In the Macael region outcrops mass of serpentinites with a variable content in carbonates, that are mined by different companies. These serpentinites, frequently transformed into carbonates, have very different characteristics according this carbonatation degree, so that will have different behaviour once emplaced in buildings. They also can be affected by different decay processes. This fact has been demonstrated by the characterization of the main mineralogical, physical and mechanical properties of samples from two different quarries
