The Report on the Gladiatorial Combats of 174 BC

Abstract

The four extant Livian passages reporting on gladiatorial combats are discussed; the focus lies upon textual problems in the fourth passage, but in briefer compass a solution to a textual problem in the first is proposed and the reliability of the number transmitted in the third is defended. There is also a short preliminary discussion of the sources available and of the sources actually used in the transmission of this information.

D ie vier uns noch erhaltenen livianischen Stellen, die über Gladiatorenkämpfe berichten, werden besprochen; dabei steht der Wortlaut der vierten Stelle im Mittelpunkt, auf den Wortlaut der ersten und die an der dritten überlieferte Zahl wird aber auch kurz eingegangen. Einleitend werden die für die Überlieferung dieses Stoffs verfügbaren und benutzten Quellen knapp behandelt.

Cuatro pasajes restantes sobre combates de gladiadores se analizan en este trabajo. El foco recae sobre los problemas textuales del cuarto pasaje, pero en un límite más breve se pone un problema textual en el primero, y se defiende la fiabilidad del número transmitido en el tercero. También hay una pequeña discusión preliminar sobre las fuentes disponibles, y las fuentes que realmente se usan en la transmisión de esa información.
