Hervis et verbis. Plantas medicinales chilenas en la literatura de los siglos XVI y XVII

Abstract

El propósito general de la investigación es estudiar las dinámicas históricas de los saberes acerca de las hierbas sanadoras chilenas a través de las obras literarias de los siglos XVI y XVII, desde la perspectiva de la historia del conocimiento y como procesos de hibridismo cultural. El análisis permitirá, además, aclarar, por un lado, que las plantas dibujadas por el jesuita son las que gozaban de una mayor relevancia social. Por otro lado, se mostrará la importancia de estudiar las fuentes científicas junto a las literarias para considerar también la ignorancia como un aspecto clave en la formación y circulación del conocimiento.

The general purpose of the research is to explore the historical dynamics of knowledge about Chilean medicinal plants through literary works of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, from the perspective of the history o knowledge and as processes of cultural hybridism. The analysis will also make it clear, on the one hand, that the plants drawn by the Jesuit Alonso de Ovalle (1646) are those that enjoyed the greatest social relevance. On the other hand, it will show the importance of studying scientific sources alongside literary ones, in order to also consider ignorance as a key aspect in the formation and circulation of knowledge.
