T1 The Impact of Language Testing: the Spanish BULATS examination in Taiwan

AB En los últimos años se ha producido un gran cambio en la visión de la evaluación delenguas. Frente a la reacción negativa que el término "examen" solía provocar tradicionalmente enlos alumnos, nos encontramos hoy con una situación muy diferente en el campo del aprendizaje delenguas. Bien enfocada, la evaluación de las capacidades lingüísticas del estudiante puede tener una influen- cia muy positiva en su proceso de aprendizaje, y así lo perciben tanto los profesores como los propiosestudiantes. La experiencia llevada a cabo en la Universidad de Wenzao en Taiwán con los alumnos de españolque realizan el examen de BULATS, nos mostrará cómo y por qué los aprendices de una lenguaperciben la evaluación como una forma de orientar y estimular su progreso en el estudio del idioma. Si el examen logra ofrecer una representación objetiva del nivel de capacidad del alumno para usarel idioma en situaciones de la vida real, esa información puede ser utilizada por el profesor y por elpropio alumno para mejorar el proceso de aprendizaje de la lengua. El impacto de la información aportada por los resultados del examen va más allá incluso y afectatanto a las decisiones del centro educativo como a los responsables de las políticas educativas y a lasociedad en general
AB In recent years there has been a great change in the view of the evaluation of langua- ges. Faced with the negative reaction that the term "review" traditionally used to provoke the stu- dents, we are today with a very different situation in the field of language learning. In focus, assessing the student's language skills can have a positive influence on their learning pro- cess, and thus perceive both teachers and students themselves. The experiment carried out at the University of Wenzao in Taiwan with Spanish students taking thetest BULATS, it shows us how and why language learners perceive the evaluation as a way to guideand stimulate progress in the study language. If the test does provide an objective representation of the level of students' ability to use the languagein real life situations, such information may be used by the teacher and the students themselves toimprove the process of learning the language. The impact of the information provided by the test results even goes further and affects both thedecisions of school as those responsible for education policy and society in general
