AB “El juicio del siglo” de Joaquín Guzmán Loera alias El Chapo, que transcurre en Nueva York desdenoviembre de 2018, ha colocado en el centro del interés público al ex líder del cartel de Sinaloa y quien fuera el capomás buscado del mundo. el proceso judicial y sus revelaciones, han suscitado también un nuevo interés internacional porla cuestión del narcotráfico y el funcionamiento de las organizaciones criminales transnacionales. Por otra parte, el hechode que Guzmán Loera, siendo un narcotraficante mexicano, sea juzgado en los Estados Unidos, demuestra un grado deconexión en materia de seguridad entre ambos países y su colaboración en la lucha contra el narcotráfico. esta lucha hasido institucionalizada a partir del año 2007 en el marco de la iniciativa Mérida, un programa conjunto para erradicar loscarteles mexicanos y disminuir el crimen organizado, firmado por los presidentes George Bush y Felipe Calderón, ycontinuado (a pesar del cambio de las administraciones, y agendas políticas en ambos países), por los presidentes BarackObama y Enrique Peña Nieto. la extradición del chapo a los estados unidos en 2017 fue considerada un logro relevanteen términos de cooperación bilateral en el combate al narcotráfico, y la coronación de la estrategia denominada Kingpinstrategy. sin embargo, como demuestran investigaciones recientes, la relevancia política del chapo sobrepasa el marco dela colaboración oficial entre ambos países, al revelarse los lazos del narcotraficante tanto con agencias del gobiernoestadounidense, como con las élites de poder en México
AB "The trial of the century" of Joaquín Guzmán Loera aka El Chapo, which takes place in New York sincenovember 2018, has generated a vast public interest in the figure of the former leader of the Sinaloa cartel and world’smost wanted criminal. the judicial process and its revelations have also raised a new international attention to the issueof drug trafficking and transnational criminal organizations. on the other hand, the fact that el chapo, being a mexicandrug trafficker, is facing a trial in The United States, demonstrates a degree of connection in the security area between bothcountries, and their collaboration in the fight against drug trafficking. this fight has been institutionalized since 2007 withinthe framework of the Mérida initiative, a joint program to eradicate mexican cartels and reduce organized crime, signedby Presidents George Bush and Felipe Calderón, and continued (despite the change in the administrations, and politicalagendas in both countries), by presidents Barack Obama and Enrique Peña Nieto. the extradition of Guzmán Loera toThe United States in 2017 was considered a significant bilateral achievement in the framework of the Mérida initiativeprogram, and the crowning of the Kingpin strategy. However, as recent investigations have shown, the political relevanceof El Chapo exceeds the context of the official collaboration between these countries, revealing the connections of thedrug lord with both us government agencies and the power elites in Mexico
