T1 La figura del abuelo en las familias españolas de la actualidad

AB La transición demográfica ha comportado una profunda transformación de las redes de parentesco, dando lugar a la generalización de las familias plurigeneracionales, al tiempo que se han generalizado los hogares nucleares. La separación residencial de las generaciones no ha comportado ni un creciente distanciamiento geográfico de las mismas ni una reducción de la frecuencia de contactos, jugando en este contexto los nietos un papel privilegiado como mediadores sociales al tiempo que propician una mejora en las relaciones entre las generaciones. En la estructura de intercambios de bienes y servicios entre los miembros de la red de parentesco, la relación abuelos-nietos no tiene, sin embargo, ningún papel privilegiado, dándose estos intercambios fundamentalmente entre los miembros de generaciones contiguas.
AB Demographic transition has brought about a profound change in kinship structures, characterized, among other things, bythe generalization of grand-parenthood.As a consequence, although the “nuclear family” is the “normal household”, the“normal family” has become the “multigenerational family”. Cultural and socioeconomic change which underlies the seconddemographic transition has reinforced individualism and the residential separation of the generations, but geographicaldistance among generations continuous to be rather small, what facilitates the contact among the generations. Grand-children play in this context an important role, promoting closer and warmer relationships among parents and their adultchildren. As interchanges among generations tend to flow according to a cascade model from one generation to the other,grand-children tend to benefit from these interchanges either in an indirect way through the effects on their parents, ratherthan directly. Although the profound change in family values in the last decades, family ties continues to be important formost Spaniards and the relationship between grand-parent and grand-child play an important mediating role.
