AB Este texto analiza el enfrentamiento que tuvo lugar en la prensa –en concreto,en el periódico El Comercio- entre los grupos liberales y conservadores a raíz de laconformación de un nuevo Congreso en 1860, que tenía el objetivo de modificar la hastaentonces vigente Constitución de 1856. A partir de aquí, se plantea una reflexión sobre elpapel de la opinión pública y los límites de la libertad de imprenta a mediados del sigloXIX en Perú.
AB This paper analyses the confrontation that took place in the press –in particular,in the newspaper El Comercio- between liberals and conservatives in relation to theformation of a new Congress in 1860. This Congress had the aim of modifying theConstitution of 1856, then in force. On the basis of this analysis, it is proposed a reflectionon the role of public opinion and the limits of the freedom of printing in the midnineteenthcentury in Peru.
