T1 Hugh MacDiarmid and Emily Dickinson : the Thistle and the Moonlight

AB Hugh MacDiarmid (1892-1978) and Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) aretwo dissimilar personalities who inhabited different universes but whosepoetry presents many similarities. They even share some influences andit is possible that Emily Dickinson influenced MacDiarmid through EzraPound. Theirs is a poetry with a powerful lyrical conciseness and anaphoristic nature that makes possible to define it as aphoristic haikai.Apart from their parallel form, they deal with similar themes: Life, Death,God, Eternity, Immortality, Beauty, Truth, Memories and Oblivion.Moreover, Horace's philosophy of carpe diem underlies their poetry andtheir lives. Their work (taking into account that we do not take intoaccount in this paper MacDiarmid's most political poetic corpus) is similarbecause it shares a universal side. But at the same time, we cannotforget that for Emily Dickinson her universe was her Poetry and herhome, whereas for MacDiarmid his universe was Scotland and Poetry.This paper shows how they are very alike, but very different at the sametime.
AB Hugh MacDiarmid (1892-1978) y Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) son dos figuras disímiles que vivieron en universos diferentes, pero cuyas poesías presentan muchas similitudes. Comparten algunas influencias, y es posible que Dickinson llegara a influenciar a MacDiarmid a través de Ezra Pound. La de ambos es una poesía con una concisión lírica poderosa y una naturaleza aforística que hace posible definirla como “haikai aforística”. Al margen de su forma paralela, ambos lidian con temas similares: Vida, Muerte, Dios, Eternidad, Inmortalidad, Belleza, Verdad, Recuerdos y Olvido. Además, la filosofía de Horatio “Carpe Diem” sustenta tanto su poesía como sus vidas personales. Sus trabajos (recordando que en este ensayo no se tiene en cuenta la mayoría de la poesía política de MacDiarmid) son similares porque comparten la misma perspectiva del universo. Al mismo tiempo, no podemos olvidar que para Dickinson su universo era su Poesía y su hogar, mientras que para MacDiarmid su universo era Escocia y la Poesía. Este ensayo refleja la manera en que son muy similares, pero al mismo tiempo, muy diferentes.
