RT Journal Article T1 The NEG elements in clause structures A1 Alharbi, Abdallah H. M. AB This article deals with the syntax of sentential negative elements in anumber of languages. We start by investigating three kinds of sententialnegative elements in Arabic. We argue that these elements occupy differentpositions in the hierarchic order of clause structure. Negative elementsoccur in positions higher than TNS, or between TNS and AG Rs, or projectinternal to the Predicate Phrase. Analysis of Arabic negative clauses revealsthat although NEG elements project as phrasal heads, they are closelyassociated with TNS and AGRs. We propose a hypothesis of Adjunctionmovement to TNS/ NEG motivated by morphological requirement of theelements involved. Movements, which should apply before Spell-out, arenecessary for Checking theory. The same procedure has been applied tonegative clauses in English, French, Italian, etc. We claim that sententialNEG elements share in their essence certain simple properties at least inthe languages investigated here.
