AB Tras repasar la historiografía másrelevante sobre la Carrera de Indias, el trabajose centra en tres aspectos: por una parte,las nuevas aportaciones que estudian losfenómenos referentes a la venalidad, el fraudey la corrupción, generados por la propiadinámica de la Carrera; por otra, la cuestióndel ascenso económico y social de ciertasélites navales y la red de infuencias que lohacían posible en ese contexto; por último, elrepaso a trabajos recientes sobre la relación deHuelva con la Carrera de Indias. A partir dealguno de estos trabajos, y la documentaciónmanejada, apuntamos ciertos paralelismos enla evolución militar y socio-económica durantebuena parte de los siglos XVI-XVII de dosimportantes clanes familiares –élites navaleslocales- surgidos en el infuyente entorno delos duques de Medina Sidonia y su relación conla Carrera de Indias, la Casa de Contratacióny la Capitanía General de la Mar Océano yCostas de Andalucía: el clan sevillano de losChaves Galindo Abreu y el de los Garrocho, losconocidos “cazadores de piratas” de Huelv
AB After reviewing the most relevant historiographical issues on the Carrera de Indias, thework focuses on three particular aspects: on theone hand, the new contributions that deal withthe phenomena of venality, fraud and corruptiongenerated by the dynamics of the “Carrera” itself;secondly, the issue of the economic and social riseof certain naval elites and the network of infuences that made it possible and that were generated in that context; fnally, we review some of therecent studies that have raised various questionsabout Huelva’s relationship with the “Carrera deIndias”. Based on some of these studies, and theappropriate documentary references, we point outcertain evident parallels in the military and socio-economic evolution (throughout a good partof the 16th and 17th centuries), of two important family clans –local naval elites– arisen in theinfuential environment of the dukes of MedinaSidonia and their relationship with the “Carrerade Indias”, the “Casa de Contratación” and theGeneral Captaincy of the Ocean Sea and Coastsof Andalucía: the sevillian clan of the ChavesGalindo Abreu and the Garrocho, the famous“pirate hunters of Huelva”
