AB El célebre discurso que John Milton escribió bajo el título de Areopagiticaen defensa de la libertad de prensa en 1644 es considerado el ensayo fundacional dela tradición del libre debate y la génesis del argumento más esgrimido en el modernoproceso de formación de la libertad de expresión: el célebre “encuentro abierto”entre la verdad y el error, el conocido argumento de la búsqueda de la verdad comovehículo del goce de la libertad. Sin embargo, esencialmente, Milton defendió en laAreopagítica una concepción abierta y dinámica de la libertad de expresión, vehículode potenciación y canalización de la energía política y social. En efecto, la defensa dela libertad de prensa que Milton articula en el ensayo areopagítico integra un conceptode libertad plural: individual y colectivo, privado y público, abierto y dinámico, en lamedida en que para la concepción miltoniana el ejercicio libre y racional de la libertadde expresión es fundamento de la energía política y de la consecución del progresosocial, constituyendo así el dinamismo político y social postulado fundamental de laargumentación que Milton sostiene en la Areopagítica.
AB The famous tract John Milton wrote by the title of Areopagitica in defenceof the freedom of the press in 1644 is widely considered the foundational essay of thefree debate tradition and the genesis of the most wielded argument in the modernformation process of the freedom of speech: the celebrated “open encounter” betweentruth and falsehood, the well-known argument of the search of truth as a vehicleto enjoy freedom. However, Milton essentially advocated in the Areopagitica an openand dynamic conception of the freedom of expression as vehicle to encourage andas a channelling device of the political and social energy. Indeed, the defence of thefreedom of the press that Milton delineates in the areopagitical essay integrates acomprehensive concept of liberty: individual and collective, private and public, openand dynamic, since for the Miltonian conception the free and rational exercise of thefreedom of speech is the foundation of both the political energy and the conquest ofsocial progress; thus, political and social dynamism constitutes the fundamental postulateof Milton’s Areopagitica
