T1 Syntactic theory and syntactic processing

AB As linguistic theory becomes more refined, linguists increasingly rely onsubtle judgments about slight acceptability differences among complexsentences as the sole evidence motivating interesting grammaticalhypotheses. It thus becomes increasingly important to make informeddecisions about the role of processing factors in determining acceptabilityjudgments in order to correctly identify the source of acceptabilitydifferences and to make appropriate assumptions about the division oflabor between a theory of competence and theories of performance.Three areas are discussed where the results of sentence processing studiesmay constrain the appropriate grammatical treatment of linguisticphenomena: d-linking, focus and morphosyntactic feature manipulation.
AB Conforme la teoría lingüística se va refinando, los lingüistas van dependiendo más en los sutiles prejuicios sobre las leves diferencias de aceptabilidad de las frases complejas como la única evidencia que motiva hipótesis gramaticales interesantes. Por lo tanto, la importancia de realizar decisiones bien documentadas sobre el papel de los factores de procesamiento en los juicios de aceptabilidad cruciales para identificar correctamente la fuente de aceptación va aumentando, para hacer posible la realización de suposiciones sobre la división de funciones entre una teoría de competencia y las teorías de actuación. Se analizan tres áreas donde los resultados de los estudios del procesamiento de frases puede restringir el tratamiento gramatical adecuado de los distintos fenómenos lingüísticos: conectores, énfasis y manipulación morfosintáctica.
