T1 The Future of Industry in Spain

AB Este artículo define una estrategia de desarrollo industrial para Españaque debe permitir, no sólo superar el importante daño originado por las dosrecientes crisis – la Gran Recesión y la pandemia provocada por el coronavirus– sino también aumentar de forma sensible el peso de las manufacturas enel PIB, revirtiendo una parte del proceso de desindustrialización vivido enlas últimas décadas. Las ayudas que España recibirá del Fondo EuropeoNextGenerationEU ofrecerán una gran oportunidad para implementarla,buscando resultados ambiciosos, dado que se parte de una industria conbases competitivas sólidas. Pero resulta crucial contar con un Estado másactivo, dotado de una visión más amplia del papel que puede desempeñar enel desarrollo industrial y de mejores instrumentos de intervención
AB This article defines an industrial development strategy, which should notonly allow Spain to overcome the serious damage caused by the two recentcrises – the Great Recession and the coronavirus pandemic – but also enablea significant increase in the weight of the manufacturing sector in her GDP,thus reversing part of the deindustrialization process experienced in recentdecades. The aid which Spain will receive from the NextGenerationEU fundwill offer a great opportunity to ambitiously implement such a policy, given thesolid competitive foundations of Spanish industry. Nevertheless, it is crucial tocount on a more active state, with a broader vision of the role it can play inindustrial development and equipped with better instruments of intervention
