AB This article reassesses the history of Byblos at thebeginning of the first millennium BC in the lightof the latest discoveries in Huelva, Spain. Firstly, itdiscusses the geopolitical changes that occurred inthe Levant in the course of the twelfth century BC,which enabled Byblos to expand into its hinterlandmaintaining a certain degree of stability. Secondly,it examines the major role played by Phoeniciantrade in the Mediterranean at the beginning ofthe tenth century BC. All of which leads to thelogical suggestion that these seafaring activitiesconstituted a substantial part of the voyages andexchanges that preceded Phoenician colonisationin the western Mediterranean basin.
AB Este artículo revisa la historia de Biblos a principiosdel primer milenio a.C. a la luz de los últimosdescubrimientos en Huelva (España). En primerlugar, analiza los cambios geopolíticos ocurridos enel Levante durante el siglo XII a.C., que permitióa Biblos expandirse hacia su interior manteniendoun cierto grado de estabilidad. En segundo lugar,examina el importante papel desempeñado porlos fenicios en el comercio del Mediterráneo aprincipios de el siglo X a.C. Todo lo cual conduce a lasugerencia lógica de que estas actividades marítimasconstituyeron una parte sustancial de los viajese intercambios que precedieron a la colonizaciónfenicia en la cuenca del Mediterráneo occidental.
