AB El escrito que inaugura la concepción moderna de la libertad deexpresión, el discurso que el conocido poeta republicano John Milton dirigió alParlamento de Inglaterra durante la Revolución Puritana en defensa de lalibertad de prensa inglesa con el singular título de Areopagítica alcanzó notableinfluencia al otro lado del Atlántico en la ideología colonial y revolucionarianorteamericana, siendo fuente de inspiración para los primeros escritos quesurcaron las colonias frente a la regulación restrictiva del libelo sediciosovigente en el common law, como reflejan los artículos periodísticos deBenjamín Franklin, los ensayos de James Alexander y la defensa de AndrewHamilton en el Caso Zenger, así como para los escritos de aquellos queadoctrinaron la Revolución, especialmente para los sermones del pastorprotestante Jonathan Mayhew y, más significativamente, para los escritos delpadre fundador de la independencia norteamericana, Thomas Jefferson,notablemente influenciado por la repercusión que estaban teniendo losprincipios de la Areopagítica en la Francia revolucionaria, reflejándose así lapresencia e influencia de la Areopagítica de John Milton en las dosRevoluciones Atlánticas.
AB The writing that inaugurates the modern concept of freedom ofexpression, the speech that the famous republican poet John Milton addressedthe Parliament of England during the Puritan Revolution in defense of the freedom of English press with the unusual title of Areopagitica, reachedsignificant influence to the another side of the Atlantic in the colonial andrevolutionary American ideology, being a source of inspiration for the firstwritings that crossed the colonies against restrictive regulation of seditious libelin force in the common law, as reflected in newspaper articles from BenjaminFranklin, the writings of James Alexander and Andrew Hamilton’s defense in theZenger Case, as well as for the writings of those who illustrated the Revolution,specially for the sermons of protestant pastor Jonathan Mayew, and, moresignificantly, for the writings of the founding father of American independence,Thomas Jefferson, considerably influenced by the impact that were taking theprinciples of the Areopagitica in revolutionary France, thus reflecting thepresence and influence of John Milton’s Areopagitica in the two AtlanticRevolutions.
