T1 Las termas y el Suburbium marítimo de Baelo Claudia :  avance de un reciente descubrimiento

AB Entre los años 2010 y 2012, la Universidad deCádiz y la Junta de Andalucía han desarrolladoinvestigaciones arqueológicas en la zona extramurosde la ciudad hispanorromana, en el marco delProyecto General de Investigación “La economíamarítima y las actividades haliéuticas en BaeloClaudia”. Se presentan en esta sede los primerosresultados, que han permitido identificar la existenciade un suburbium occidental en la ciudad,entre el cauce del arroyo de las Villas, la playa yla necrópolis oeste, cuya existencia se ha podidoconfirmar por datos geofísicos y arqueológicos. Enél han podido ser excavadas parcialmente unas estructurasque se han identificado con unas termassuburbanas, activas entre el s. II y el V d.C., habiéndoseexcavado una piscina del frigidarium yalgunas estancias calefactadas, con hallazgos muysignificativos como parte de la decoración marmóreay escultórica del complejo, que en época tardorromanafue amortizado intencionalmente pormotivos posiblemente religiosos. Estos hallazgosson de gran interés, pues además de verificar la existenciade un segundo complejo balneario público enla ciudad plantean la importancia del poblamientoperiurbano, una línea de investigación totalmenteinédita hasta la fecha.
AB Between the year 2010 and 2012, the Universityof Cadiz and the Regional Government (Junta deAndalucía) have developed archaeological activitiesin the zone outside the hispano-roman city, in theframe of the General Project of Research titled “Themaritime economy and the halieutic activities inBaelo Claudia”. We are presenting in this paperthe first results, which have allowed to identifythe existence of a western suburbium outside thecity, between the riverbed of the so called “arroyode las Villas”, the beach and the western necropolis,whose remains have been confirmed by geophysicaland archaeological techniques. Inside this area afew structures have been excavated, identified as aRoman baths complex, active from the 2nd up to the5th century a.D. A big pool, part of the frigidariumand some heated rooms have been unearthed, withvery significant findings as part of the marmorealand sculptural decoration of the complex, whichin late roman times was intentionally broken intopieces possibly by religious motives. These findingsare of great interest, since beside confirming theexistence of the second public thermae of thecity they raise the importance of the peri-urbanbuildings, a new line of research up to date.
