RT Journal Article T1 Factores que controlan la calcificación de la concha en Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (dextrorsa) T1 Controls of shell calcification in Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (right coiling) A1 González Mora, Beatriz A1 Sierro, Francisco Javier AB Samples from core ODP site 977, retrieved in the Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean Sea), have beenstudied in order to better constrain the factors controlling the calcification rate in the planktonic foraminiferNeogloboquadrina pachyderma (right coiling). For this purpose, changes in shell weight have been analysedbetween 245-190 kyr (Marine Isotope Stage 7) and show a clear millennial variability not related with themarine isotope substages. The results obtained suggest that Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (right coiling)calcification rate is directly related to optimum growth conditions, since heavier shell weights coincidewith more relative abundance of this species due to optimum temperature conditions. However, it cannotbe ruled out a secondary control exerted by surface water [CO32-], resulting from the opposite effects ofatmospheric CO2 and water temperature. Therefore, this study questions the use of foraminifer shell weightas a proxy of carbonate saturation and atmospheric CO2 in surface waters and suggests that further studiesare needed to better understand the processes behind shell calcification in planktonic foraminifers YR 2008 FD 2008 LK http://hdl.handle.net/10272/8261 UL http://hdl.handle.net/10272/8261 LA spa DS Repositorio Institucional de la Universidad de Huelva RD 30 may 2026
