RT Journal Article T1 Mechanobiology of Bone Consolidation During Distraction Osteogenesis: Bone Lengthening Vs. Bone Transport A1 Blázquez Carmona, Pablo A1 Mora Macías, Juan A1 Morgaz, Juan A1 Reina Romo, Esther AB Bone lengthening and bone transport are regenerationprocesses that commonly rely on distraction osteogenesis,a widely accepted surgical procedure to deal withnumerous bony pathologies. Despite the extensive study inthe literature of the influence of biomechanical factors, a lackof knowledge about their mechanobiological differencesprevents a clinical particularization. Bone lengthening treatmentswere performed on sheep metatarsus by reproducingthe surgical and biomechanical protocol of previous bonetransport experiments. Several in vivo monitoring techniqueswere employed to build an exhaustive comparison: gaitanalysis, radiographic and CT assessment, force measuresthrough the fixation, or mechanical characterization of thenew tissue. A significant initial loss of the bearing capacity, quantified by the ground reaction forces and the limb contacttime with the ground, is suffered by the bone lengtheningspecimens. The potential effects of this anomaly on themusculoskeletal force distribution and the evolution of thebone callus elastic modulus over time are also analyzed.Imaging techniques also seem to reveal lower bone volume inthe bone lengthening callus than in the bone transport one,but an equivalent mineralization rate. The simultaneousquantification of biological and mechanical parametersprovides valuable information for the daily clinical routineand numerical tools development.
