RT Journal Article T1 Tree rings reflect growth adjustments and enhanced synchrony among sites in Iberian stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) under climate change A1 Natalini, Fabio A1 Correia Luís, Mónica Alexandra A1 Vázquez Piqué, Javier A1 Alejano Monge, Reyes AB Key MessageWe used tree ring analysis to assess theresponse ofPinus pineato climate change in South Iberia.Climate–growth relationships changed over time, withgreater sensitivity in recent years due to increasing aridity.A common dendroclimatic signal among sites was found, suggesting that climate change is the main responsible forthe observed variation in tree growth.&ContextUnderstanding the response of Mediterranean for-ests to climate change is required to assess their vulnerabilityand to develop measures that may limit the impact of futureclimate change.&AimsWe analyzed the sensitivity of several populations ofPinus pinea(Stone pine) in Southern and Central Spain andPortugal to climate and identified some responses to climatechange.&MethodsWe constructed tree ring chronologies and studiedthe dendroclimatic signal over the last century.&ResultsThere were similarities in tree ring growth andresponse to climate among sites. Growth was enhancedafter precipitation during the previous autumn and thecurrent spring and was limited by water shortage. Inrecent decades, aridity increasedinthestudyregionandthesensitivityoftreeringgrowthtowateravail-ability increased at all study sites. We also observed anenhanced growth synchrony among chronologies as wellas an increase in ring width variability during the lastdecades.&ConclusionThe radial growth ofP. pineaindicated strongeffects of climate change. The climatic signal in tree ringchronologies suggested a plastic growth response to climateof this species, although the enhanced growth synchrony andvariability in recent years suggest the presence of conditionsthat are limiting for growth. This study provides the first as-sessment of the responses of Iberian populations ofP. pineato PB EDP Sciences SN 1286-4560 SN 1297-966X (electrónico) YR 2015 FD 2015 LK http://hdl.handle.net/10272/12756 UL http://hdl.handle.net/10272/12756 LA eng NO Natalini, F., Correia, A.C., Vázquez Piqué, J., Alejano Monge, R.: "Tree rings reflect growth adjustments and enhanced synchrony among sites in Iberian stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) under climate change".
