RT Journal Article T1 Andalusian university students’ perception of their European identity: international orientation and experiences A1 Méndez García, María del Carmen A1 Cores Bilbao, Esther A1 Moreno Gámez, Laura AB Multicultural European societies increasingly demand internationallyoriented citizens, who are willing to actively participate in civic life andable to successfully access the labour market. The European dimensionin education supposedly endows youngsters with civic values, multiculturalist attitudes and plurilingual competences which ultimatelylead to raising awareness of their Europeanness. Formative years atuniversity, pivotal to students’ individual life course and projects, are adecisive stage in the development of supranational, collective identity formation. Similarly, pan-European study programmes are aimed atinspiring a sense of European citizenship and identity, the mostrenowned of which within the Higher Education context is Erasmus+. Byconducting focus group interviews, this paper probes Andalusianuniversity students’ understanding of their European identity andverifies the causal dynamics between European identity-taking andforeign country sojourns, comparing the perceptions expressed byreturnees to those by students who have not had the opportunity toparticipate in international study programmes (ISP) at higher educationyet. Results evidence students’ apparent supranational orientation, general awareness of commonalities across Europe and utilitarianoutlooks on the EU, although not a clear discernment of its institutionsor a marked European identity.
